To provide safe drinking water to every rural household, the Government of India launched the Jal Jeevan Mission. Prime Minister started this mission on 15 August 2019 to provide tap water connections to all rural homes.
This scheme aims to deliver clean water through piped connections directly to houses in rural areas where many people face water problems and have to walk long distances to fetch water.
The goal of the Jal Jeevan Mission is to give every rural family a safe and reliable water connection by 2025. Both the central and state governments are working together to make this happen, with a total budget of ₹3.60 lakh crore allocated for this mission.
Main Objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission
This mission aims to make sure every rural household receives fresh, clean water through a pipeline connection. Places where water is not easily available will get tap connections installed directly to homes. The scheme is also called “Har Ghar Nal Se Jal Yojana” (Water Connection to Every Home).
Besides providing water, the mission will help create local jobs and improve the economic condition of rural citizens. It supports the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission by increasing water availability in schools, health centers, Anganwadis, and Panchayat offices.
